The red, black and green flag is a powerful symbol of Black pride. Marcus Garvey created the flag. It was formally adopted on August 13, 1920 at the month long convention of his organization, the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (U.N.I.A. - A.C.L.). Delegates from 25 African countries all voted and agreed that this red, black and green flag would represent the entire African race, wherever we may be found in the world.
- red stands for the blood of Black people that was shed for our freedom
- black stands for Black people
- green for our motherland of Africa.
The red, black and green flag has been used by Black people ever since, and is also known as the Black Liberation Flag, African-American flag, Pan-African flag, RBG flag, Afro-American flag, Black Power Flag, etc.
